August 5 – Omnicon
The 9th annual Rio Grande Valley anime and pop-culture event is back. Attendees can meet their favorite voice actors, get autographs, join gaming tournaments, win great prizes, watch the most current anime hits, participate in fan panels and explore the Vendor Room filled with anime and pop-culture merchandise. August 6 – Jackson Street Market Days
The first Saturday of everything month, Harlingen hosts the Jackson Street Market Days. You can shop for treasures, antiques, collectibles, plants and produce. Plus, enjoy live music and great food. 9am – 3pm, Jackson St between 4th and Commerce. http://downtownharlingen.com/jackson-st-market-days
August 6, 13, 20 and 27 – Nature Olympics
Every Saturday Quinta Mazatlan features August Discovery Days Nature Olympics. Test your skills against some of this Valley’s fastest, strongest, and toughest creatures! The Quinta Olympic Games include: sprint racing, relays, high jump, long jump, and balance beam. Programs are from 10am – 11am and 2pm – 3pm.http://www.quintamazatlan.com/
August 11 – Stars and Skies Party
The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) Stars & Skies party features Inside the Dome-Planetarium shows, hands-on science experiments and stargazing outside the museum. This program is designed to encourage the community to learn about space science and technology through special activities and programs designed around night sky observations, NASA programs, and much more. August 12 – Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán
In its fifth generation, this Mexican folk ensemble of mariachi music was created in 1897 by Gaspar Vargas. Enjoy the sounds of this amazing group that has been delighting audiences for over 100 years at the McAllen Convention Center, 8:30pm.
August 13 – Viva McAllen
McAllen Crime Stoppers Presents “Viva McAllen Streets” to promote living a healthy lifestyle and have partnered with the City of McAllen to promote safe city streets with their campaign “Run, Ride & Share”. The event features 25 mile, 40 mile and 60 mile cycling rides; 5k/10k costume run/walk; Crossfit competition, and cook-off. http://vivamcallenstreets.com/
