October 1 – 2 – PalmFest International Folklife Celebration
One of the largest festivals to take place in the Rio Grande Valley, the 11th Annual PalmFest International Folklife Celebration features six stages with live entertainment, historical displays, shopping, art, family games, rides and kids’ activities, cooking demonstrations, a classic car
show, and diverse food and beverages. The event takes place at the McAllen Convention Center and grounds.
October 6 – 8th Annual Historias De La Vida Celebration: A Cocktail Affair
Support South Texas literacy and celebrate the 2016 Literacy Champion Honorees and award-winning local author David Bowles. The event includes delicious food, cocktails, and great entertainment provided by Maria D’Luz, local award winning singer-songwriter and pianist. The event takes place from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at 800 North Main Street, McAllen, TX 78501.
October 6 – 27 – Nature Speakers Series
Quinta Mazatlan hosts a weekly speaker series and nature tour with topics that range from native birds and butterflies to local culture and art. The event takes place every Thursday from 6:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m.
October 14 -15 – Goodwill Cookoff
The 3rd Annual Goodwill Cook Off takes place at Valley Race Park in Harlingen with an IBCA sanctioned BBQ team cooking competition (teams of four) benefiting job training programs and employment placement services of Goodwill Industries of South Texas. 1st – 10th place winners receive cash prizes.
October 22 – IDEA Academy Edinburg 5k Color Run / Walk 2016
Run for fun and support local IDEA schools at the 5k color run and walk. The first 100 participants receive an IDEA 5K Color Run/Walk T-shirt.
October 22 – Planta Nativa Festival
Enjoy an evening social at the Quinta Mazatlan World Birding Center with live music, food, wine, native plant art, native plant sale and keynote speaker Pam Penick, an Austin Author of “Lawn Gone.” The event takes place from 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
October 29 – Día de los Muertos: Pantéon, A Vigil for All Souls
The Día de los Muertos celebration returns to Museum of South Texas History with a great family event filled with favorite activities and food to honor loved ones. Join the festivities from 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
October 29 – November 2 – Texas Butterfly Festival
Head to the National Butterfly Center, the “butterfly capital of the USA,” for the 21st Annual Texas Butterfly Festival and Biennial Members’ Meeting of the North American Butterfly Association. The event only takes place every six years and happens at the peak of butterfly season. The event features field trips and educational activities, private gardens and guided tours, North American Butterfly Photo Contest and a free community day for the whole family!
