Fun Activities in Rio Grande Valley

With the high summer-time temperatures in the Rio Grande Valley approaching quickly, families in the RGV often look for fun activities that help beat the RGV heat. To make the process a little easier, we’ve put together a list of options:

South Padre Island

South Padre Island is just a short drive away and provides visitors with many options to choose from that will keep you cool in the South Texas heat including:

Parasailing

Deep sea fishing

Watersports

Horseback riding on the beach

Located on the beach at South Padre Island, Tx – Schlitterbahn offers a beach resort hotel, an indoor waterpark and of course, an outdoor waterpark. What’s unique about it is the beach inspired waterpark features like the “Transportainment River System” that connects nearly every water ride and tube chute in the park. This means that instead of waiting in long lines under the sun- you’re able to wait in the water while you relax in your tube. There’s a total of 24 rides, slides, and rivers, and they offer both casual and resort dining.

McAllen

McAllen offers quite a few options when it comes to pools and water parks. The Zinnia Park and Spray ground in particular offers areas where visitors can have a picnic, hike along trails, play sand volleyball, basketball, skateboard, or simply cool off under canopies that cover the spray grounds.

Edinburg

Freddy Gonzalez Memorial Park (Freddy Gonzalez Dr & Veterans Blvd)

Much like the McAllen Park and Spray ground, Edinburg also offers a similar park with walking tails, swings, slides and well maintained green space that offers room for picnicking. In 2014 the park was updated and now offers a spray ground and air gazebo/shelter as well.

Pharr

Pharr Aquatics Center:

The Pharr Aquatic Center offers a competition pool with 10 lanes and a diving board, a shaded toddler pool, a lagoon with water sprayers and splash park, water dumping buckets, and water cannons along with several large slides.

Mission

Nearby school district La Joya ISD, recently opened a Sports and Learning Complex which is also the first school-owned water park in Texas. The 90,000 sq. ft. water park is also available to the entire Rio Grande Valley but it doesn’t stop there. This facility also offers a 27-hole golf course, 21,993 sq. ft. natatorium, four tennis courts, as well as a planetarium and learning center. It is located at 1801 N. Western Rd. Mission, Texas.

Harlingen

This park is joined by the Boys and Girls Club and of Harlingen and a skate park. Equipped with a pool and recently added splash pad, this park offers families many options to keep cool while spending some time outdoors.
