Residents Enjoy Hundreds of Butterfly Species In and Around NABA Butterfly Center
The National Butterfly Center is a project of the North American Butterfly Association (NABA), a nonprofit dedicated to the conservation and study of wild butterflies in their native habitats. The National Butterfly Center comprises a 100-acre wildlife center and native species botanical garden and is also adjacent to the number one master-planned community in the Rio Grande Valley, Bentsen Palm, with new houses for sale.
The park is open to the public and offers trails for exploring, observation areas, educational exhibits, and a plant nursery. The National Butterfly Center is NABA’s flagship facility and its primary focus is to educate the public about the value of biodiversity, the beauty of the natural world, the wonder of butterflies, and the important role they play in maintaining healthy ecosystems and sustainable food resources. More than 300 species of butterflies make the Rio Grande Valley their home throughout their lifecycle, and more than 200 of those have been identified within the National Butterfly Center grounds. Visitors can observe the various types which encompass dozens of varieties from the Swallowtail, White and Sulphur, Brush-foot, Gossamer-wing, Metalmark and Skipper. NABA has been instrumental in identifying, counting, protecting and even saving several butterfly species from extinction.
Butterflies and moths are key indicators of a healthy ecosystem and environment. Areas rich in butterflies and moths provide a wide range of environmental benefits, including pollination, natural pest control, and more. They are also a critical component of the food chain, supporting birds, bats and other animals, which help maintain a healthy ecosystem.
The National Butterfly Center and NABA promote the growth of butterfly populations within its protected areas as well as by providing a series of guides on how to create habitats and plant butterfly-friendly gardens. The Bentsen Palm community also fully embraces these guides with all landscaping done using indigenous plants that attract and feed the butterflies and birds that make the Rio Grande Valley their home.
